Renback Barn in Rochelle, VA sits about an hour and a half outside Richmond in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Grand wooden beams, sweeping pastures, mountain views in every direction. It’s the kind of venue where you don’t have to work hard to find something worth photographing. Erin and TJ’s fall wedding there was a good reminder of why I love shooting outside the city. Candid documentary coverage in a setting like that almost takes care of itself.
If you’re looking for a Richmond wedding photographer who shoots venues like this regularly, here’s what working together looks like.
Getting Ready
We began the day with detail shots, focusing on the elegant ring box personalized with Erin and TJ’s names and their wedding date. Thoughtful touches like these set the tone and showcased the couple’s personality. Afterward, I joined TJ and his groomsmen, capturing their laid-back camaraderie as they prepared for the day. Erin and her bridesmaids brought plenty of energy, especially when Erin popped a bottle of champagne to kick off the festivities.

The Ceremony
Erin opted not to do a first look, choosing instead to make her entrance walking down the aisle to TJ’s beaming smile. The natural mountain breeze swept through the barn as they exchanged vows, adding a touch of drama to their intimate, laughter-filled ceremony.

Couple & Bridal Party Portraits
With the Blue Ridge Mountains as our backdrop, we captured candid, connection-driven portraits. Erin’s laughter, TJ’s genuine expressions, and the bridal party’s relaxed energy all contributed to timeless, natural photos that reflect the authentic feel of the day.

Reception and Sparkler Exit at Renback Barn
The reception inside the barn was exactly what you want. Warm light, wooden beams, nobody sitting down. Erin and TJ kept the energy going the whole night — the shoe game got loud fast, the dance floor never really emptied out, and TJ carried Erin out under the sparklers at the end which was a pretty perfect way to close it out.
That kind of send-off at a venue like Renback just works. The darkness outside, the sparkler light, the mountains somewhere behind it all. One of those endings that doesn’t need much help from a photographer.

One of the best I’ve shot in Virginia. The Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop, the wooden barn interior, and the open pastures give you completely different looks in the same location. Fall light out there is especially good, the colors in the mountains behind the venue are hard to beat.

Fall is hard to beat. The mountain foliage in the background, the cooler temperatures for portraits, the warm light later in the day. That said, spring and summer work well too since the outdoor ceremony space and pastures look great in any season.
